It is well known that because hiring a lawyer can be costly sometimes it’s just not financially viable to retain a lawyer to assist with all aspects of your legal matter. We offer the option of retaining on a limited scope basis, also known as an “Unbundling Agreement”. This is an option for those who don’t qualify for legal aid, don’t have the financial resources to provide a full retainer, or may need legal advice to help guide them rather than full representation.

What is a Limited Scope Retainer?

A Limited Scope Retainer is an Agreement outlining what aspects of your matter we’ll be assisting with and what limitations are in place. Whether it’s to assist with the exchange of financial disclosure, assist with the preparation of your legal documents, or to open a line of communication by way of a formal letter, there are many options to tailor our services to fit your needs. Limited Scope Retainers can range in services, or ‘scope’, based on the assistance you require and what you’re able to afford. When you retain on a limited scope basis we do not act or provide services for anything not specifically outlined in our contract, or ‘retainer’. If you choose to start with a Limited Scope Retainer but it becomes necessary or desirable to expand those services, further retainers can be discussed as your matter unfolds. There may be risks associated with retaining on a limited scope basis, which is why it’s always best to assess your situation with a lawyer to help determine whether a Limited Scope Retainer is the best option for you.
